Emco Industries Limited

EMCO Industries Limited is a member of the Imperial Group of Companies namely: (i) Imperial Electricity Company (Pvt) Limited; (ii) ICC (Pvt) Limited (formerly Imperial Construction Company); (iii) Interhom (Pvt) Limited; (iv) ICC Textile Limited; and (v) Associated Engineers (Pvt) Limited. The parent company, Imperial Electric Company (Pvt) Limited, was established in 1931 and has been involved in the trading of electrical goods. Soon after the creation of Pakistan, the need for import substitution was felt and the sponsors of the parent company made a decision to establish a small manufacturing unit for electrical goods.

In 1951, a very modest beginning was made by setting up a small facility located in the basement of the offices of the Imperial Electric Company for the production of electrical accessories. With single minded devotion and the untiring efforts of the present Managing Director, Mr. Ataur Rehman, the facilities were continuously upgraded and a full-fledged facility was established at G.I. Road by 1954. The first comprehensive insulator manufacturing plant was in operation with active participation, know-how and machinery coming from Japan and France. Keeping pace with the ever increasing and diversified demand for Insulators for national utilities and electrical industries in Pakistan, it was decided in 1965 to expand the facilities to produce all standard types of Insulators, including those required for extra high tension lines.

Since electrical ceramics is a highly specialized industry requiring skill, experience, time tested formulae and proven know-how, EMCO signed a technical collaboration agreement for 15 years with NGK Insulators Limited, Japan who are the world's largest and most renowned manufacturers of Insulators. In 1967, the present plant located at Lahore-Sheikhupura Road was commissioned. With the active participation of the personnel from NGK Insulators, Japan and the Pakistani engineers' untiring efforts, EMCO was producing quality Insulator using mostly local raw materials. The plant is now manned by a team of highly qualified and experienced Pakistani engineers apart from over 600 technicians. The company has a present installed annual capacity for the production of 5000 tons of Insulaors which will be augmented to 6000 tons per annum by the end of 1990.

In addition to electrical porcelain, EMCO runs a full fledged department for production of chemical porcelain such as Acid Proof Lining Bricks, Raschig Rings and Saddles and Special Refractories. This line has now been developed to a stage where the entire demand of beverage factories, milk plants, chemical industry, vanaspati industry, fertilizer industry, etc., for acid proof wares is met by EMCO.

EMCO maintains a well equipped laboratory where fundamental research for development and routine quality control tests are carried out on raw materials, bodies and glazes. The work on research and development is a continuous process to keep abreast with ever diversifying requirements of porcelain insulators, chemical porcelain and ceramic tiles. The normal production of insulators requires rigid quality control with limited performance tolerances allowable. Considerable efforts, as such, are directed towards the production of insulators with better dielectric characteristics. EMCO has all the in-'ouse testing facilities for this purpose. Moreover, our progress and development is benefited by the rich experience gathered from NGK of Japan. EMCO industries is still the only Unit for manufacturing Insulators in Pakistan and is not only supplying the entire demand within the country, but is also exporting to developing and developed countries all over the world.

Having achieved an enviable position in the field of electrical ceramics, EMCO, in 1984, decided to broad-base their manufacturing activities and utilize their long experience in ceramics by adding an ultra modern plant for the manufacture of decorative wall tiles with an annual capacity of 500,000 sq. metres. The entire machinery for the manufacture of Tiles has been supplied by world renowned machinery manufacturers from West Germany and Italy. the Tile Plant was commissioned in October 1985, and has become, in no time, the "Market Leader" for decorative ceramic wall tiles.

Conscious of the demand in the market, EMCO has taken steps to further expand its operations and commission a separate plant for manufacturing floor tiles. Work has already started on the project in collaboration with a renowned Italian company and the plant is expected to go into production in the last quarter of 1990.
