Embratel Chooses Wandel & Goltermann For Test Equipment

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., Nov. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Wandel & Goltermann Technologies, Inc. (WG) (Nasdaq: WGTI) today announced that Embratel, Brazil's national telecommunications company, has purchased almost $1.5 million of WG's test equipment.

As Brazil's telecom carrier, Embratel (Empresa Brasileira de Telecomunicacoes S.A.) provides links among the country's 27 state telecommunications companies and to international carriers. They also provide links to Brazilian companies requiring interstate communications networks. Embratel's customers are free to use their own protocols on their networks, but this multiprotocol environment sometimes causes problems when connecting to Embratel's networks. To test their connection equipment, Embratel chose WG's DA-30(R)C Internetwork Analyzer.

According to the engineers responsible for test instruments at Embratel, the demand for data communications links is growing rapidly in Brazil. The company selected DA-30C analyzers because Embratel must ensure service for its customers. And providing high-quality service will help give the company an edge as deregulation takes hold.

For Embratel, the points of convergence between networks is critical. The company must be certain that the routers connecting their customers' networks to Embratel's networks are working correctly and providing peak performance. The DA-30C analyzer is especially useful in this case because it can monitor traffic on both sides of a device simultaneously to measure the device's performance and quickly troubleshoot problems.

Like any telecommunications companies, Embratel is concerned about future network developments. Most of the company's links are currently X.25 and Frame Relay, but Embratel is currently reviewing ATM technology for high-speed links. The DA-30C fits into this strategy because of its modular design. When Embratel wants to begin testing ATM devices, they can choose among WG's ATM line interface modules, which can easily be plugged into Embratel's existing DA-30C analyzers.

"The demand for network services is increasing every day," said John Goehrke, WG's vice president of marketing, "and the multiprotocol, multitopology environment is quite complex. The DA-30C analyzer's `any-to- any' capabilities make it the ideal solution for companies around the world."

Wandel & Goltermann offers a full spectrum of data and telecommunications test equipment. The company has marketing, development and manufacturing facilities located in the U.S., Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.
