Elk plans new facility, reports results.

Elk Corporation, Dallas, TX, has announced plans to locate its previously planned premium asphalt roofing plant in Shafter, CA. The facility, a 150,000 square foot state-of-the-art production site, will cost an estimated $30 million. It is scheduled to begin production of premium laminated fiberglass asphalt shingles by the end of 1994. Designed to serve the growing demand for its roofing products in the Western states, the plant will eventually employ up to 140 people in the production of "Prestique" brand residential roofing tiles, which are manufactured using a fiberglass nonwoven substrate. This new site joins existing ones in Ennis, TX and Tuscaloosa, AL.

The company also reported record year-end and fourth quarter results for 1993. For the year ending June 30, Elcor posted sales of $173 million, an increase of 16% from last year and net income of $17.7 million, up from $8.3 million a year ago. For the fourth quarter, sales of $44.3 million were up over last year's $43.1 million. Net income for the quarter was $4.1 million. Strong demand for the Prestique fiberglass shingles was the driving force behind portions of the increases in sales and earnings.

In other Elk news, the Engineered Materials Group at the company has been renamed the Nonwovens Materials Group; it is located in Ennis and Dallas,
