In a story set on the border of Canada and the US in the 1960s, Elias tells of one Sunday afternoon during the Cuban missile crisis. As American soldiers are installing nuclear missiles, the top is being blown off the quiet innocence of a small Manitoba town. During the time of the traditional Sunday nap, the author reveals the sex, humor, and natural and unnatural violence just under the surface of the quiet town. It is amazing how many cultural and historic events and people Elias ever so naturally weaves into his story, including Marilyn Monroe, LBJ and JFK. The sexual scenes are surprisingly raw, the language occasionally raunchy, but the story is also tender and true. Nola Theiss, Sanibel, FL
