Elegy for Michael C. Jordan.

ELEGY FOR MICHAEL C. JORDAN

From the hand of God to the hand of God
Is a way not charted by finitude,
A course not metered by spatial scales,
For who can measure in number of miles
From outer space to the inner heart
   Or from attitude to altitude

From the hand of God to the hand of God
Never is fixed by counting days.
The promised three score years and ten
Not always are the golden mean.
Sometimes the great return still young
While oft a lesser man delays.

From the hand of God to the hand of God
   Is computed by intent alone.
Whatever the space and span consumed
One's fruit displayed in fertile fields
   Asserts that either selfishness
Or selflessness was what was sown.

From the hand of God to the hand of God
   For finite beings demands death--
A death which is the guarantee
   Of the infinity of life
And gives to love its ultimate
   Significance and timelessness.
