Electronic Arts, Mpath announce online game agreement and investment.

SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 3, 1997--Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:ERTS), a leading global interactive entertainment software company, and Mpath Interactive, a privately held Internet entertainment company, today announced a license agreement that will bring several of Electronic Arts' titles to the Mplayer service.

The pact will provide the Electronic Arts (EA) titles to Mplayer, Mpath's award-winning Internet multiplayer game service, on an exclusive basis. In addition, Electronic Arts has made a minority investment in Mpath. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Larry Probst, chairman and CEO of Electronic Arts, said, "We are pleased to announce our relationship with Mpath. As one of the leaders in online game services, Mpath is an excellent choice for expanding our audience to a whole new group of players who are looking for a fast-action multiplayer gaming experience."

"We are delighted to have a partner like Electronic Arts," said Paul Matteucci, President and CEO of Mpath. "EA has been the most consistent developer of hit games over the last several years. Their decision to partner with us clearly indicates EA's intention to play a leadership role in the evolving on-line gaming market."

The agreement comes on the heels of PC Gamer's selection of Mplayer (www.mplayer.com) as the leading multiplayer game service. In its April edition, the magazine gave Mplayer its highest rating, citing the service's speed, ease of use and quality opponents. In recent weeks Mplayer has won similar acknowledgment from Computer & Net Player, GameSpot and Network Computing.

The companies also said that Electronic Arts will utilize Mpath Foundation, the technology and business systems behind Mplayer, to deploy additional offerings on the World Wide Web under its own brands.
