Electronic Arts Ships Future Cop: L.A.P.D. for the PC & Macintosh.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 25, 1998--Electronic Arts(TM) (Nasdaq:ERTS), the world's largest interactive entertainment software company, began shipping Future Cop(TM): L.A.P.D., a strategic action-packed computer game set in futuristic Los Angeles for the PC and Macintosh(R).

Similar to the PlayStation(R) version of the game released earlier this year, players must use their wits and massive firepower to destroy the army of criminals who have overrun the city. Additionally, computer owners will enjoy the game's new features including an additional level, breathtaking 3-D accelerated graphics and multiplayer support.

In the game, the player is a member of Los Angeles' police department, and must rescue the city from ruthless criminal gangs that have taken over and turned Los Angeles into a cesspool of extortion, theft and drug trafficking. Fortunately, the player is equipped with a revolutionary assault vehicle, the X-1Alpha.

Packed with an explosive arsenal, the X-1Alpha is capable of transforming from a speedy and agile hovercraft into a powerful but nimble mechanical walker. Different in-game environments dictate whether the vehicle will perform as a walker or the hovercraft. It is up to the player to determine which one to use for optimal performance -- or survival.

Players use the X-1Alpha to cruise through eight 3Dfx supported environments that replicate such real Los Angeles locations as Griffith Park, Venice Beach and the Los Angeles Airport's "Space Port." Along the way players can use over 15 futuristic weapons to blast through heavily fortified enemy strongholds to eliminate them.

Future Cop: L.A.P.D. features two distinct game modes: Crime War and Precinct Assault. In Crime War, the single player must reclaim eight sections of crime-infested Los Angeles from the gangs. In the multiplayer version, gamers play cooperatively to team up and annihilate the criminals' reign of the city. Precinct Assault is a strategy game that can be played against a friend or the computer.

Future Cop: L.A.P.D. for the computer takes advantage of the capabilities of the 3Dfx graphics chipset in delivering stunning explosions and realistic environments. "Graphics cards incorporating 3Dfx technology allow us to display more colors than other graphics accelerator boards," said R.J. Berg, producer at Electronic Arts. "And we took full advantage of that." Using a modem or a LAN, computer gamers can also play with each other in the Crime War mode or against each other in Precinct Assault.

The computer version of the Precinct Assault game includes an additional level, called "La Cantina," not included with the PlayStation version. In this and the four other high-octane levels of Precinct Assault, players must defend their respective bases against opponents using hover jets, tanks and automated defensive turrets.

Gamers earn points by claiming neutral turrets and destroying enemy craft, which they can then use to build their own hover jets and tanks. The object of each level is to successfully invade your opponent's base with one of your tanks. At the end of the level, a scoreboard reveals valuable statistics such as points earned and enemies destroyed, giving bragging rights to the player with the highest tally.

Future Cop: L.A.P.D. for the computer features an all-new engine developed exclusively for the game. It offers intense 3-D supported graphics as well as rich, real-time lighting effects. More than 50 fluid and distinctive character animations, including multiple random death animations, were created using motion-capture technology. The ability to transform the vehicle from a walker into a hovercraft and back again adds to the game's strategic flavor.

Multiplayer capabilities support two players over a modem or LAN.

Future Cop: L.A.P.D., a hybrid disk supporting both PC and Macintosh, has an ESRB "T" (Teen) rating and is available for MSRP of US$19.95.
