Gieras presents a textbook for basic courses on electrical machines, covering the fundamentals of converting electrical energy to mechanical energy; transformers; classical electric machines such as direct current brush machines, induction machines, wound-field rotor synchronous machines; and modern electrical machines such as switched-reluctance machines and permanent magnet brushless machines. Switched-reluctance and permanent magnet brushless machines are now more popular than direct-current brush machines, he says, but are rarely included in introductory textbooks.
