Electing to pretend they care about us; Email email@example.com OPINION GEORGE TYNDALE THE MERCURY'S HARD-HITTING COLUMNIST SPEAKS HIS MIND...
FORGIVE me for asking, but is there a General Election on the way? I enquire because suddenly the increasingly truculent 'Dave' Cameron has reshuffled his Cabinet to get rid of a few crusty and unpopular old blokes and replace them with women who might be described as easy on the eye, were you to suffer from myopia.
Then came the announcement by Danny Alexander - a man who relishes the main chance in the same way that a hungry boa constrictor regards an approaching mongoose - that the Liberal Democrats have changed their view of the so-called bedroom tax.
Perhaps next we shall see the Labour Party move to get rid of Ed Miliband, who seems a jolly nice and earnest fellow but has as much charisma as a week-old cheese sandwich.
Maybe I am wrong, but it seems to me that we will see far more such shiftiness from the parties as next May's General Election approaches.
The spin doctors will no describe all this jockeying for popularity as our leaders being responsive to the wishes of voters.
That does not convince me. It is just another case of our inconsistent and value-less politicians trimming their sails in the direction they believe the wind of public opinion is blowing.
Come next June, it will be business as normal no matter what party - or parties - are in power.
We will matter no longer.
