Elder-care facility planned.

Plans are in the works to build a 280-bed nursing home and rehabilitation center in Southampton (Long Island), New York, according to the project's architect, Jerrold Clarke, AIA, a partner at Manhattan-based Schuman Lichtenstein Claman & Efron Architects (SLCE).

The plans for Payton Lane are being reviewed by the New York State Department of Health as well as the town and village planning boards in Southampton.

The two-story, 147,400-square-foot facility would be built near the intersection of County Road 39 and North Sea Road in Southampton. It would house an in-patient nursing home, a rehabilitation center and an adult daycare program. Proposed amenities include areas for social activities, physical- and occupational-therapy centers, lounges, chapel, gift shop, dining rooms and meeting space, a courtyard, and indoor and outdoor gardening areas. Parking spaces for 176 vehicles would be located in front of the structure. The project is expected to create about 200 new jobs.

Payton Lane would be one of the first nursing facilities in New York to be constructed under the new New York State Department of Health codes and the Federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). To be handicapped-accessible, the nursing home will incorporate larger dining areas and greater square footage per bed than most facilities built before the new codes.

Clarke says these requirements not only help the handicapped, but also convey a greater sense of space for everyone.
