Ego trip of councillors; Letters.
NEWCASTLE City councillors seem to be on one almighty ego trip by awarding themselves massive pay rises but doing nothing constructive to improve the city.
I avoid going to the city centre whenever I can and I certainly won't drive there on account of the bus lane cameras that are raking in vast amounts of cash with no sign of improvements to roads or traffic systems.
Newcastle Council are also raking in vast amounts of revenue by issuing taxi licences to every Tom, Dick or Harry. Indeed, it gets worse, while taxi drivers born in the UK have to pass a locality awareness test, those who have recently come to the UK are exempt from this requirement and their CRB checks only go back to the time they arrived in the UK.
Oh, and did I mention that even though the council are issuing all these extra taxi licences, they are reducing the number of taxi ranks, causing chaos all over the city? Today, I walked along John Dobson Street, New Bridge Street and other areas, which were ankle deep in litter. So I ask the question "What the hell is going on in Newcastle?"
