Edwards ready for big clash.

MACHEN coach Tony Edwards is awaiting the 'big one' on Saturday when the minnows of Machen take on the cup stars of Abercynon in a Division Five versus Two clash.

'It was a splendid 28-17 win over Gwernyfed for us today,' said Edwards. 'But next week will be a good one for us. We have to show what a Division Five side can do.

'Gwernyfed are a useful outfit, so we were hard-pressed, but tries by David Williams (2), Gareth Wade and scrum-half Jonny Wright outdid their three good tries.'

Nantyglo had another great outing at Banna Park as fly-half Spencer Clease showed his golfing prowess with his deadly kicking, placing six goals and scoring two tries along with efforts by Archie Williams and Kevin Hale that helped defeat Blaenavon 35-17.

It was a top-of-the-table clash in the South East at Bishops Field that saw Llantwit Major outkick home club Llandaff 4-2 in a 12-6 win to go to first place. South Wales Police won 22-6 at Ogmore Vale, Llandaff North beat Ferndale 30-18 and Deri edged out visitors Cilfynydd 20-15

The Porthcawl v Cwmgwrach match in South West was called off in bizarre fashion after referee Bill Hunt of Hengoed pulled a muscle getting out of his car at the ground, and although the Porthcawl physio worked on him, he was unable to recover to take the game.

Aberavon Green Stars were far too strong for BP Llandarcy running in a 61-6 success and there were victories for Crynant, 35-19 against Neath Athletic, and Pontardawe, who won 52-17 at Cwmtwrch.
