Who has forgotten her firebrand campaign against rival candidate Rahul Gandhi in the Amethi constituency during last year's Lok Sabha polls? And Narendra Modi made no mistake in cashing in on her girl-next-door image and catapulting her as the Human Resources Development Minister in his cabinet. But controversy has followed Smriti into the HRD Ministry's office at Shastri Bhavan in New Delhi!
There are allegations that she had filed false documents with the Election Commission of India last year, in support of her educational qualification. Smriti, in her affidavit for the April 2004 Lok Sabha polls, claimed that she had completed her BA in 1996 from Delhi University. However, in another affidavit filed in July 2011 to contest the Rajya Sabha election from Gujarat, she had mentioned B.Com Part-I as her highest qualification, claimed a complainant.
"Her educational qualifications are not false. There is no ambiguity. The court should not even have taken any cognizance of the complaint," Smriti's lawyer said. But the point is, how could someone with such an active political career and also with a reasonable presence earlier in the television entertainment industry show such ambiguity in registering the details of her educational background?
Metropolitan Magistrate Akash Jain took cognizance of the complaint and fixed August 28 as the date for recording of pre-summoning evidence.
