Education and Training in Food Science: A Changing Scene.

This text comprises an edited selection of the papers that were presented at the 2nd EFFOST European Conference held at CERIA in Brussels in April 1991. In practice, it reviews the need for increased training in the food industry to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western Europe and the USA. Higher education is discussed, and this includes the training of technicians, and European initiatives, like ERASMUS and Network, are also discussed.

Divided into six parts under titles: The present picture, The way forward, Training for developing countries, European collaboration, International trade and consumer protection, and The future, no fewer than 23 contributions are published here. Their titles are: A view from the European Commission on the education, training and qualification of food scientists, engineers and technologists for industry and trade in the twentyfirst century; A view from industry in the field of education, training and qualification; A comparative study of the patterns in education of food technologists in the Eastern European countries; A comparative study of the patterns in some European countries; Food science in the United States; University education in food technology - the various philosophies; Higher education in food chemistry; Craft and technician training in the field of food processing in Germany; Training in the food processing industry in France; Provision of education and research for overseas students; Aims, target group and curriculum of the international course on quality, assurance and marketing in food processing; European networks - ERASMUS, COMETT, TEMPUS and FLAIR; An ERASMUS scheme for European food engineers; The European consortium (or continuing education in advanced meat science and technology (ECCEAMST) - incentives and intentions; A consortium of European food education and training enterprises; Education in dairy science provided by the European Alliance of Dairy Teachers; The Official Food Chemist in Germany - duties and education; Retailing, catering and processed foods; The needs of the European consumer; A course in food science and society; Scientists for international trade and consumer protection - legal requirements; Training of craftsmen, technicians, analysts and technologists - prospects for the future; and Engineers' and managers' training - a challenge for the future. There were also two poster sessions associated with this event.
