A GATHERING STORM From its opening frames, Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain for PlayStation 3 is both cinematic and gripping--a film noir thriller that pulls influences from films like The Maltese Falcon, Rear Window and Seven. You play as four unrelated characters (one of whom is Madison Paige, a sexy soft butch photographer who rides a motorcycle and is as boldly gutsy as she is clever and foxy). All are on the hunt for the Origami Killer--so named for his penchant for leaving origami figures in the hands of his victims. Both the story and the atmosphere are dark, the fight scenes are spine-tingling and the plot twists are shocking. The game controls, which rely as much on quick thinking and your moral compass as they do on speedy reflexes, make this game novice friendly. You decide the course of the adventure through both action scenes and dialog options. However, all decisions have consequences. In some cases those choices may prove fatal, and there are no do-overs; once dispatched, the character is gone for the duration of the game. Riveting and heart-wrenching, Heavy Rain is a unique and spellbinding whodunit game that has to be experienced. ($60, gamestop.com)
