onE year ago...

THE new-look Everyman was Britain's Best Building, beating The Shard and the London Olympics' swimming venue as it took the prestigious RIBA Sterling Prize. City leaders looked ready to scrap almost all of Liverpool's bus lanes. Staff and pupils at Haydock High School were trying to trace the history of "Arthur", their science lab skeleton, who was being laid to rest after 40 years of service.

FIVE years ago...

EVERTON beat Liverpool 2-0 in the Merseyside derby. Former Brookside actor Vince Earl told of his lucky escape after spending 20 days in intensive care fighting a rare blood disorder. He was doing stand-up on a cruise ship when he became ill. Bricklayer Karl Dures, who had two children with X Factor hopeful Rebecca Ferguson, said support for the star had even reached the site in Melbourne, Australia, where he was working.

25 years ago... MERSEYSIDE industry was left reeling when it was announced Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead was to close if it could not be sold. Thousands of homes and offices in Liverpool were left without mail after around 250 postal workers from Copperas Hill walked out for 24 hours over a disciplinary matter. An emergency order was placed on 467-year-old Formby Hall to stop it falling into ruin at the hands of vandals.

50 years ago...

LOLA Thomas, 13, ran into her blazing home in Princes Park to rescue her mother and two foster sisters. The young hero said: "I didn't have time to think about what I was doing." A West London magistrates' court heard how a man from Bootle was seen to throw a piece of glass towards Tony Macedo, the Fulham goalkeeper, during their clash with Everton the previous Saturday. The glass went through the net leading the magistrate to jokingly inquire if the goal had been allowed.
