1994: New president of South Africa Nelson Mandela was photographed in unlikely garb -wearing the red and white of Liverpool FC. He sported a replica shirt to welcome the club on a South African tour.

1979: Figures showed that MrAverage,living in the north west,needed an income of pounds 7,003 a year to keep up the same lifestyle he enjoyed in January -an increase of pounds 276, compared with a national increase of pounds 384.
