Echelon is a Chalone Wine Estate, based in Napa, Calif. (Wine Notes).

Echelon is a Chalone Wine Estate, based in Napa, Calif. Its 2000 Viognier, however, is from Clarksburg in the Sacramento River Delta. Boy is this rascal floral! It's OK in the a.c. department, too, at 13.4%. I'd like it lower, but then you can always add a little water or a couple of ice cubes. I agree that it would pair up with sea bass and grilled chicken, but you can hold the roasted eggplant with garlic in abeyance, thanks. The suggested retail is $13.50, and that alone, given the high prices for the first Viogniers, makes it a good deal. Tasted in August 2001.
