NEWCASTLE Eagles picked up their first pre-season win at the fourth attempt with a comfortable victory over Team USA Select.
After a pair of defeats in Belgium and a 13-point loss at the hands of Sheffield Sharks, Fab Flournoy's men finally clicked into gear at Sport Central.
The Eagles, who will continue to play out of the Northumbria University venue for the start of the season, put on a great display at times but als o showed there's still more to come.
The first where showed mettle cruised to Te a m U S A Select, now a regular pre-season opponent, always give 100% but the disparity in quality meant the Eagles were always a step ahead.
But it was not a perfect display and head coach Flournoy will be no doubt be concerned by their thirdquarter display, which saw the Eagles give up 29 points.
The first half was where Newcastle showed their mettle as they cruised to a double-digit advantage early on.
The Eagles ended the first quarter with a 26-14 lead, with new power forward Victor Moses particularly impressive.
The Eagles once again had to do without the services of Kai Williams and Drew Lasker, who also missed last Friday's game at Sheffield, but this time Flournoy turned to returning Geordie Eddie Matthew, while Jamal Williams took his brother's place.
Matthew in particular profited and showed his good shooting touch to help his side to an excellent 26-8 second quarter that saw the game all-but decided as the home side went in to the locker room up by 52-22 with 20 minutes to play.
After the break, Newcastle struggled a little and Team USA made some inroads. But the re-signed Rahmon Fletcher showed why the Eagles were so keen to bring him back. His presence and scoring swiftly turned the tide back in Newcastle's favour.
half was Newcastle their as they a doubledigit advantage early Flournoy even had the luxury of running virtually his second unit for the whole of the final 10 minutes. And while the scoring dissipated somewhat, the Eagles still made it a clean sweep of all four periods.
They also managed to register their first 100-point game of pre-season as their offence came together nicely ahead of the season opener on September 21.
The Eagles host Sheffield tomorrow and will look to take another step forward against a side they can expect to be right up at the top of the BBL with them.
