 EXXON EARNS MMS SAFE AWARD
VENTURA, Calif., April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Interior

Department's Minerals Management Service (MMS) has presented its Camarillo District Safety Award for Excellence (SAFE) to Exxon Company, U.S.A. The award honors Exxon for the outstanding manner in which it conducted operations on Platform Hondo and the Offshore Storage and Treating Vessel in the Santa Ynez Unit offshore southern California.
 J. Lisle Reed, Regional Director of the MMS Pacific Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Region, said "Assistant Secretary David C. O'Neal, MMS Director Scott Sewell and I congratulate Exxon and its employees for achieving the goals of the SAFE program in southern California. Exxon has maintained a strong awareness for the safety of personnel, the importance of environmental protection, and adherence to operating regulations."
Robert E. Kallman, Offshore Program Advisor for MMS, presented the SAFE award during the American Petroleum Institute's Energy Information Night on April 29, in Ventura. O'Neal was the keynote speaker.
Kallman, in congratulating Exxon, said "MMS initiated the SAFE program to recognize exemplary performance by offshore operators and to increase public awareness of the achievements of industry in ensuring safe and pollution free operations. I am pleased that we are able to confer the SAFE award to a company that has achieved these goals."
"At Exxon, our aim is to place safety first in all we do," commented Dr. C.G. Lyons, Western Production Division Manager. "We are very proud that the MMS has chosen to recognize Exxon's employees and contractors for their commitment to the continuous improvement of safety and to protecting the natural environment."
Also representing the MMS was Thomas W. Dunaway, Regional Supervisor of the Office of Field Operations.
Dunaway said that MMS inspection personnel found safety of operations and environmental protection to be of paramount importance to Exxon employees in their daily work. "The company's clean and efficiently maintained facilities, cooperative offshore personnel, and extensive training requirements have earned Exxon the Camarillo District SAFE Award."
During the six-month evaluation period of July 1 through Dec. 31, 1991, MMS inspected the Santa Ynez Unit 47 times. "Each inspection indicated that personnel were safety conscious and aware of operating regulations," said Dunaway.
The MMS Offshore Inspection Program provides the basic information for the semiannual evaluation of candidates for the SAFE program. The criteria are records of events, operational considerations, and significant developments in the control of fires, pollution prevention, operational safety, maintenance of equipment and regulatory awareness.
