EXPO 2020 -Turkish officials begin lobbying in Paris for Izmir.
A delegation of Turkish officials from Izmir, including the governor, head of the chamber of commerce and Izmir Development Agency held a series of talks in Paris on Wednesday to promote Izmir as the host city in 2020.
Turkish officials, accompanied by Turkish Ambassador to Paris, met with Vicente Gonzalez Loscertales, Secretary-General of the Bureau of International Expositions (BIE), an intergovernmental organization created to supervise international exhibitions in the world.
Earlier this month, Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent a letter to the Secretary-General Loscertales to show Turkey's will to host the EXPO 2020 between April 30 and October 31, 2020.
Erdogan, in his letter, assured the BIE that Turkey would fulfill all of its obligations within the agreement signed with BIE and that Turkey had the desire and capacity to organize the EXPO 2020.
Izmir will vie for Expo 2020 hosting rights with the theme "New Routes to a Better World - and Health for All".
Confirmed bids have so far been made by Izmir and Ayutthaya, Thailand. Proposed bids include Brisbane, Sao Paulo, Copenhagen, Dubai, Houston, Minneapolis, Silicon Valley (Mountain View), and Cape Town.
The first Expo took place in London in 1851, almost a century before the creation of BIE.
