EXPANDING THE PACIFIC BASIN MARKETPLACE: APL OFFERS COMMERCIAL CONTAINER SERVICE TO/FROM RUSSIAN FAR EAST

OAKLAND, Calif., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- American President Lines (APL), the leading container carrier in the Pacific Basin, said it has expanded its service area to include key coastal and interior points in the Russian Far East. Initially developed last year to carry relief cargoes to the former Soviet Far East, the weekly service has now been upgraded to a full commercial basis, linking eastern Russia with North America and the rest of Asia.
Served are the port cities of Vostochny, Vladivostok and Nakhodka, and the inland cities of Khabarovsk, Birobidzhan, Magadan and Korsakov, APL provides an intermodal service, with vessel calls at Vostochny and pick-up or delivery by truck for other points. The service utilizes connecting-carrier feederships between Vostochny and Busan, Korea, where shipments are transferred to or from APL's own line-haul or intra-Asia containerships. The entire shipment, from origin to destination, is coordinated by APL under a single bill of lading.
For most of the Russian origin and destination points, APL can now provide both 20- and 40-foot containers, either standard or high-cube. Refrigerated service is to commence on Sept. 15 for Vostochny, Vladivostock and Nakhodka.
 Supplier of Timber, Fish
Key commodities moving from the Russian Far East to points throughout Asia and North America include lumber and seafood products, which are the major resources of the region.
As timber supplies in the Pacific Northwest become increasingly scarce, said Curt Stoner, APL's regional sales manager in Seattle, eastern Russia will become an important supplier. He said North American forest products companies are already showing significant interest in that region.
According to Torey Presti, managing director for APL in Korea, imports into the Russian Far East from North America and elsewhere in Asia include consumer goods, capital equipment for processing fish and timber, building materials, and food products. For example, Presti said, substantial tea processing is done in eastern Siberia for consumers throughout the former Soviet Union, and an important import commodity is bulk teas from India and Sri Lanka, which are markets served by APL.
 Fast, Reliable Transits
Transit times to and from Vostochny are fast, facilitating the movement of perishable commodities. For example, the transit to Vostochny is 20 days from Seattle, 21 days (intermodal) from New York, or 24 days from Calcutta, India. Vostochny to Kobe, Japan, is five days. Intermodal services to Nakhodka adds an additional day, or to Vladivostok, an additional two days. Intermodal service to the more remote city of Birobidzhan requires eight days from Vostochny.
Service reliability is enhanced by APL's electronic cargo-tracking system, and the on-site efforts of Silver Wind Corp., APL's Vladivostok-based agency. Any APL office in North America or Asia can book a customer's cargo to the new service.
APL is part of the American President Companies (NYSE: APS) group , based in Oakland, CA. The group provide container transportation and related services in North America, Asia and the Middle East through an intermodal system combining ocean, rail and truck transportation.
