EXIDE ELECTRONICS RECEIVES SIGNIFICANT ORDERS FROM MAJOR FAA PROJECT
RALEIGH, N.C., May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Exide Electronics (NASDAQ: XUPS), a technology leader in uninterruptible power systems (UPSs) for thirty years, announced today that it has received an additional $48 million in orders from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for power protection products and services. This brings the total dollar value of orders initiated by the FAA over the past several months to $140 million. The company believes that cumulative orders could potentially total $200 million. Exide Electronics Series 3000 UPSs are being ordered under the provisions of the FAA Air Route Traffic Control Center Modernization Project. Most of the 26 locations designated for UPS installations are regional control centers responsible for directing mission-critical air traffic activities and controlling information gathered by both civilian and military air surveillance radars.
The first UPSs under this project were installed at the FAA test and orientation site in Raleigh, North Carolina, a facility that mirrors the power configuration of an actual Air Route Traffic Control Center. Systems implementation is currently being completed in readiness for the initial orientation of FAA facilities engineers.
The FAA Air Route Traffic Control Center project is a part of a comprehensive modernization and expansion program, valued at approximately $25 billion, that also includes tower operations, navigational aids and radars. The entire program began in 1984 and is expected to span a 15-year period to completion.
"Considerable technical and vertical systems integration is inherent in a project of this scope," said James A. Risher, Exide Electronics' President and Chief Executive Officer. "A dedicated team of FAA staff and members from our own Federal Systems Division, Power Systems Group and Customer Support Operations have been working very diligently to ensure timely response to FAA requirements. To date, we are very pleased with the progress that has been made in laying the power foundation that will support this very complex systems infrastructure."
Exide Electronics was selected by the FAA in 1991 as one of the primary suppliers to assist with the Air Route Traffic Control Center Modernization Project. The company joins a select group of system developers that includes IBM, Harris Corporation, AT&T, Sony and Martin Marietta to provide FAA regional locations with state-of-the-art computer, voice switching, telecommunications and power protection, control and distribution systems.
Exide Electronics is the largest company in the world dedicated exclusively to developing and manufacturing a full line of power protection systems. Headquartered in Raleigh, N.C., Exide Electronics responds to the power protection needs of a broad range of businesses and institutions worldwide, including many Fortune 1000 companies. Exide Electronics products are used for financial, medical, industrial, telecommunications, military and aerospace applications -- wherever continuous power is essential to daily operations.
