EXIDE ELECTRONICS MOVES AGGRESSIVELYIN CLIENT/SERVER NETWORKING ENVIRONMENTS

 New Technologies and Distribution Strategies
to Boost Marketshare in Fast-Growing $2.0 Billion Market
RALEIGH, N.C., May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Exide Electronics Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: XUPS), a leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of power protection solutions, today announced a new family of uninterruptible power systems (UPS) that will significantly raise the company's position in the high-growth, local and wide area network markets. The new UPS products, as well as a new Value Added Reseller program, are being introduced this week at the COMDEX/Windows World trade show in Atlanta.
According to the Boston-based market research firm Venture Development, Inc., the worldwide market for UPS products in the client/server networking arena is growing between 20 and 30 percent a year, representing the fastest growing segment for UPS products and services. The size of this market segment is estimated at $2.0 billion.
Exide Electronics derived approximately 40 percent of its $213 million in fiscal 1992 revenues from the client/server networking arena, a market which it first entered in 1989, and is one of the three largest worldwide providers of UPS products in this market. The company is the dominant provider of UPS solutions for the large systems market, such as mainframes and data centers, which accounts for approximately 60 percent of the company's 1992 revenues.
"Our latest offering of Network Power Management Services, including our new Powerware(R) Prestige line, will enable us to move aggressively into the client-server, LAN and WAN market and substantially build marketshare," said Exide Electronics' president and CEO James Risher. "Due to advances in our technology and world class manufacturing processes, we've substantially reduced the parts count of our new products. The efficiencies we realize enable us to reduce prices by as much as 30 percent on some new models, while improving our margins.
"Our approach is not to compete on a single `Box' hardware-only strategy. Exide Electronics is valued for its consultative expertise in providing a total solution of integrated hardware and software power management services that protect network power infrastructures. We draw from our strengths as the world leader in the large systems area for customers including the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of the Navy, and have focused our resources on the high-growth UNIX and PC systems environments - the UPS markets that will experience the strongest growth for the foreseeable future."
The company's "Powerware Network Power Management Services," introduced at COMDEX/ Windows World, include the family of competitively priced Powerware Prestige UPS products, multi-level software support tools, and service options. The Powerware Prestige will initially be available in five power ratings, from 800 volt amperes (VA) to 1500 VA.
In addition to new products and services, Exide Electronics also announced its "MORE" Value-Added Reseller (VAR) program designed to strengthen the company's distribution capabilities. Exide Electronics will provide VARs with market development funds which are earned on the basis of UPS product sales and redeemed for market development assistance provided by Exide Electronics, such as telemarketing, direct mail efforts and trade show support.
Exide Electronics has grown rapidly as demand for power protection has surged in recent years. Revenues for the six months ended March 31, 1993 rose to $119.3 million, a 27 percent increase from a year earlier. In this period, net income before the cumulative effect of an accounting change jumped 89 percent to $2.1 million.
Exide Electronics is the world's largest dedicated developer, manufacturer, marketer of UPS products from 250 VA to parallel systems with capacities measured in thousands of kilovolt amperes (kVA). The company offers power protection hardware, software and services for the total range of electronics systems, including high performance workstations and networks (both LANs and WANs); personal, mini and mainframe computers; telecommunications equipment; medical and research systems; point of sales devices and facility-wide applications. Power protection products include Powerware and Series 3000 UPS product lines, OnliNet(R) and OnliSafe(R) automatic shutdown and monitoring software products, network connectivity components and PowerCare(R) service.
