EXIDE ELECTRONICS AWARDED MAJOR DEFENSE CONTRACT

EXIDE ELECTRONICS AWARDED MAJOR DEFENSE CONTRACT
 RALEIGH, N.C., May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Exide Electronics

(NASDAQ: XUPS), a technology innovator in power protection systems for 30 years, today announced that it has been awarded a five-year requirements contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command. The contract, which is effective immediately, has been valued by the Navy at $95 million, depending on actual requirements.
Under the terms of the contract, Exide Electronics will provide Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) ranging in size from 25 kVA to 300 kVA, as well as training, documentation, installation services and spare parts. The Company's UPS's will be used primarily to safeguard the operations of mid-range computers and communications systems in Navy land-based facilities that include Command and Control, Computer and Intelligence centers. These high performance power protection devices continually condition the power supplied to mission-critical applications and provide emergency battery backup in the event of loss of power.
This contract represents the third substantial government procurement awarded Exide Electronics in the last 10 months. In July of 1991, the Company was awarded a separate five-year Navy contract for UPS's in the range of 400 kVA to 750 kVA with a potential value of $32 million. More recently the Company announced that it had been selected to provide UPS products and services for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Air Route Traffic Control Center Modernization Program. To date, the FAA project has generated orders in excess of $90 million, with total estimated revenues that would reach $200 million, depending on the actual requirements of the FAA.
According to James A. Risher, Exide Electronics' President and Chief Executive Officer, "The award of these significant contracts and agreements, in conjunction with others that have been let to Exide Electronics in recent years, clearly demonstrates our leadership position as a major supplier of power products to the Federal government. We attribute this strong market position primarily to our ability to provide lowest cost/highest value products that adhere to very complex, highly defined specifications. However, I believe broad product line offerings and consistent performance, for which we have received "Blue-Ribbon Contractor" status for quality, service and dependability, are also important considerations."
The UPS products being supplied to the Navy must meet very stringent specifications that permit them to operate inside or outside environmentally controlled facilities, at any altitude and within a temperature range from 0-50 degrees c. They must also be globally compatible to operate within a wide range of voltages and frequencies which vary by country. Exide Electronics UPS's not only respond favorably to these requirements, they meet and exceed MIL-STD 454 for safety criteria and workmanship, MIL-HDBK 217 for reliability and MIL-STD-I-45208 for quality control.
Exide Electronics is the largest company in the world dedicated exclusively to developing and manufacturing a full line of power protection systems. Headquartered in Raleigh, N.C., Exide Electronics responds to the power protection needs of a broad range of businesses and institutions worldwide, including many Fortune 1000 companies. Exide Electronics' products are used for financial, medical, industrial, telecommunications, military and aerospace applications -- wherever continuous power is essential to daily operations.
