 Power Management Solutions
Exide Electronics offers power management and power protection products, software and services for the total range of electronic systems, including high-performance workstations and networks; personal, mini and mainframe computers; telecommunications equipment; medical and research systems; point-of-sale devices; and facility-side applications.
The company differentiates itself from competitors on the basis of its "integrated power management solutions" approach, technology and quality leadership, and a broad product line.
Customers are offered turnkey, single-source power management and protection solutions which integrate all necessary UPS hardware, software, connectivity components, maintenance, support, and consulting services.
Exide Electronics products include: Powerware(R) and Series 3000 on-line uninterruptible power systems (UPS); ONE-UPS standby power protection devices; OnliNet(R) and OnliSafe(R) network and workstation power management software; network connectivity components; and PowerCare(R) service.
The company is the dominant provider of power management and power protection solutions for the large systems market. However, Exide Electronics has also targeted the client/server and networking markets for its future growth. In addition to its integrated-solutions approach, the company launched a new program for value-added resellers (VARs) in May to provide market development funds and assistance. Since the introduction of MORE (More On-Line Revenue from Exide), 525 new VARs have signed on to distribute Exide Electronics products and services.
Exide Electronics' corporate offices and primary manufacturing facilities are located in Raleigh, N.C., with additional manufacturing facilities in the U.S., Canada and Europe. The company directly employs over 1,300 employees worldwide and is represented by more than 150 independent domestic and international sales organizations. It has wholly owned subsidiaries in Canada, France, Germany and England, and sales support offices located throughout the United States and in Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore and Cyprus.
To better serve the needs of its three primary markets -- the office (Small Systems Group, or SSG), the facility (Large Systems Group, or LSG) and service (Worldwide Service Group, or WSG) -- Exide Electronics is organized into separate strategic business units (SBUs).
The company conducts business worldwide through distributors, direct sales groups, value-added resellers (VARs), original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), manufacturers representatives, and joint venture partnerships. Key customers include the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the U.S. Department of Defense and many Fortune 1000 corporations.
Exide Electronics was founded in 1962 as a division of Exide Storage Battery Company, which was formed in 1888 for the manufacturing of storage batteries. It was purchased by private investors in 1982 and became a publicly-held company in 1989.
 Future Direction
The company has sustained a solid position of power protection industry
leadership for more than 30 years. Its marks of distinction continue to be in technology innovation, quality, and extensive worldwide product support. As a result, Exide Electronics has enjoyed excellent growth, with a five-year compounded annual growth rate of nearly 17 percent.
The company will continue to lead the UPS industry in the development and application of advanced power management technologies, including its new Powerware Network Power Management Services, which link UPS hardware, power monitoring and automatic shutdown software, connectivity devices and service to protect network-wide system uptime requirements.
 Energy Star Ally
In May 1993, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) extended recognition to Exide Electronics as an Energy Star Computer Program Ally. This designation was based on the capabilities of Powerware Network Power Management Services to allow network managers to centrally program power-downs when any electronic system connected to the network is not in use.
 Uptime Applications
Exide Electronics' products and services are used to address the power management needs of a wide variety of mission- and revenue-critical applications, including financial, medical, industrial, telecommunications, military and aerospace -- wherever continuous power is essential to daily operations.
