EXCHANGE TO OPEN EUROTOP 100 STOCK INDEX TRADING 5:30 A.M.; POST ELECTION DAY START IS PLANNED TO CAPTURE INCREASED MARKET ACTIVITY
NEW YORK, Oct. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Commodity Exchange, Inc. (COMEX) today announced that beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 4, the exchange will open trading in Eurotop 100 Index futures beginning at 5:30 a.m. EST daily. COMEX's futures on the Eurotop 100 Index, which represents a basket of 100 blue-chip stocks traded on nine European countries, presently trade from 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. EST. Trading in Eurotop 100 futures began on Monday, Oct. 26. Trading volume in the new contract has been strong, as more than 5,000 contracts were traded during the first five days.
Mr. David Halperin, president of COMEX, said the earlier trading hours are expected to further increase contract market liquidity by maximizing the overlap between trading in Eurotop 100 futures and the period in which most of the underlying European markets are open. By implementing the schedule beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 4, Mr. Halperin said the exchange will provide investors with the opportunity to participate in the European markets during a period which may be marked by increased activity as a result of Tuesday's Presidential election. Trading will continue to cease at 4:15 p.m.
The Eurotop 100 Index tracks 100 blue chip stocks traded in the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the Netherlands. COMEX has licensed the rights to trade futures based on the Index from the European Option Exchange (EOE) in Amsterdam, while the American Stock Exchange offers trading on options based on the Index. The Index is the only pan-European index traded in the United States.
In addition to Eurotop 100 futures, COMEX is the world's largest exchange for the trading of gold and silver, and also offers copper futures and options trading.
