EX-SANTA CLARITA MAYOR ARRESTED.

Byline: Patricia Farrell Aidem Staff Writer

SANTA CLARITA - Former Mayor Jill Klajic, a leader in Santa Clarita's cityhood drive, was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of stealing her 5-year-old grandson in an incident she described Monday as part of an ongoing domestic dispute with her adult daughter.

Klajic, released Friday night after posting $40,000 bail, has not been charged. A Sept. 29 arraignment has been scheduled.

The sheriff's investigator on the case was unavailable Monday, and the District Attorney's Office did not return phone calls for comment.

Klajic said her grandson was in her custody legally on Friday - she had picked him up from a relative's house and was preparing to take him camping - when she was handcuffed, arrested and jailed in Sunland on suspicion of felony child stealing.

``It's part of a huge misunderstanding,'' Klajic said. ``I did what I had to do for my grandson.''

Klajic said she had permission to have the boy in her custody under a years-old visitation agreement that gave her custody of her grandson from Friday to Sunday nights, every other weekend.

She said that her daughter, Rebecca Klajic-Rostenkhani, had filed the child-stealing complaint against her after Klajic ordered her out of her home.

``I think it's some kind of mistake,'' said Klajic's lawyer, Gary Symonds. ``I don't see any criminal intent on Jill's part. It's over the welfare of a 5-year-old kid.''

The boy has been placed in the custody of his paternal grandmother, Armida Acosta.
