EX-FIRE CAPTAIN GETS 1-YEAR JAIL TERM.

Byline: Michael Coit Daily News Staff Writer

A former Ventura County fire captain who pleaded no contest to selling methamphetamine and possessing explosive devices was sentenced Friday to a year in county jail and five months probation.

Ventura Superior Court Judge Allan Steele sentenced William Handy to the maximum possible jail term. Steele had sentenced Handy to probation in May but delayed his decision on a jail term until he received a recommendation from county probation officials.

In February, Handy pleaded no contest to three charges of selling methamphetamine in December 1994. He also admitted to charges of keeping a blasting cap detonator and a military fuse in his Newbury Park home.

Handy, 49, had served 20 years with the county Fire Department when he resigned after being placed on administrative leave without pay in January 1995 in connection with the charges.

Ventura County sheriff's detectives arrested Handy at a Newbury Park supermarket after an undercover sheriff's detective bought 13.5 grams of methamphetamine from him, according to court records. Handy also was indicted on charges of selling smaller amounts of methamphetamine, totaling 3.5 grams, on two other occasions in December 1994.

The grand jury also indicted Handy on suspicion of being under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of his arrest. Steele dismissed that misdemeanor charge at the May sentencing hearing.

The two explosives charges deal with devices found during a search of Handy's home that prompted narcotics detectives to call in the sheriff's bomb squad.
