EVEREST MEDICAL RECEIVES BIPOLAR LAPAROSCOPIC PATENT

EVEREST MEDICAL RECEIVES BIPOLAR LAPAROSCOPIC PATENT
MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Everest Medical Corporation

(NASDAQ: EVMD) today announced that the United States Patent Office has issued a patent on Everest Medical's bipolar laparoscopic cholecystectomy device known by the trade name BiLAP(TM). The BiLAP allows surgeons to perform less invasive laparoscopic procedures with bipolar electrosurgery technology.
"We are very excited about this patent because it confirms our leadership position in bipolar electrosurgery. We expect to receive additional biopolar laparoscopic patents in the near future. This new patent complements our existing inventory of patents on bipolar technologies, material applications and device designs," said Michael Hollenhorst, Everest's chairman, president and CEO.
The BiLAP patent is the 18th patent issued to Everest since the company's founding in 1983 and the eighth patent to be issued to Everest in 1991. Everest's other patents are in various aspects of bipolar electrosurgery technology with emphasis on minimally invasive surgery. Bipolar electrosurgery is inherently safer than the traditional monopolar electrosurgery because the radio frequency (RF) energy used to cut and coagulate tissue is contained at the surgical site rather than requiring passage through the patient's body. The bipolar technology eliminates the potential for alternate site burns on the patient, which is a danger with monopolar technology.
Minneapolis-based Everest Medical Corporation, which became public in December, 1990, is a manufacturer of bipolar electrosurgical products for the endoscopic and laparoscopic markets.
