EVEN A 'SLO POKE' CAN WIN AT INDY
INDIANAPOLIS, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Race car drivers usually win

awards for speed. But the 45 drivers trying to qualify for this year's Indianapolis 500 can also collect prize money for their lack of speed, thanks to the new Slo Poke Award, sponsored by the D.L. Clark Company, manufacturer of Slo Poke(R) caramel candy on a stick.
The Pittsburgh-based candy company, which also produces the world- famous Clark(R) Bar, Bun(R) Bar and Black Cow(R) brand candies, is the only candy company to be an official Indianapolis 500 Speedway sponsor this year. It will present $5,000 to the team whose driver records the slowest time for a single qualifying lap during the four days of qualifying trials, May 9-10 and May 16-17.
"This award was not created to designate a loser," said Fred Communale, Clark vice president. "It is meant to draw attention to the fact that we all can have slow days, or laps for that matter, and still come out on top. Who knows? The winner of the Slo Poke Award might even go on to win automobile racing's most heralded crown."
Because the award is for the slowest single lap and not the slowest qualifying time, which is the average of all four qualifying laps, it's quite possible that the Slo Poke winner will qualify for the race and may even grab the checkered flag.
Over the past five years, drivers who have recorded the slowest, single-lap qualifying times included former Indy 500 winner Gordon Johncock, whose slowest lap of the field in 1991 was 212 miles per hour (mph). Other recent slowest-lap times included Jim Crawford, 210.512 mph in 1990; Rocky Moran, 211.079 mph in 1989; Teo Fabi, 205.667 mph in 1988; and Steve Chassey, 201.572 mph in 1987.
Slo Poke(R) is one of four candy brands produced by the Pittsburgh- based D.L. Clark Co. Other brands include Clark(R) Bar, Bun(R) Bar and Black Cow(R).
