EVANS TO HEAD DORNA, USA; APPOINTS BURNETTE AS EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT
NEW YORK, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Dorna Sports Promotion, Inc., the second largest worldwide sports marketing firm, headquartered in Madrid, has appointed Richard H. Evans as president and chief executive officer of Dorna, USA, responsible for all of Dorna's operations in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico, it was announced today by Richard T. Golding, managing director and chief executive officer of Dorna.
"We are delighted to appoint someone of Dick's stature in sports and entertainment marketing and production to head our North American operations," said Golding. "With Dick at the helm, we believe we will rapidly expand our presence here as we have in Europe and the rest of the world."
Evans' career has spanned 25 years in sports and entertainment, most notably as the former president and chief executive officer of Madison Square Garden Corporation, and prior to that, chairman, president and CEO of Radio City Music Hall Productions. Evans began his career with the Walt Disney Company, where he was involved in the development, construction and operation of Walt Disney World.
Avelino Ponte, who has been responsible for the successful introduction and growth of Dorna in the United States, will now report to Evans as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Adtime USA, Inc.
"I am very pleased to welcome Dick to Dorna and I am convinced his presence will allow us to further accelerate our rate of growth and the achievement of our strategic objectives," said Ponte.
In one of his first moves, Evans announced the appointment of James E. Burnette as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Dorna Sports Promotion, Inc. Burnette is the former vice president of sports and news sales for the NBC Television Network.
"Jim Burnette has forged an exemplary career in sports television sales and marketing at NBC and ABC, and I'm confident that his expertise will add significant value to our organization," said Evans.
Prior to joining NBC, Burnette was affiliated with the ABC Television Network, where he held various sales positions, including vice president of financial planning.
Dorna, USA is currently best known domestically for its revolutionary Adtime computerized billboards, most visibly employed courtside by 11 NBA teams. The billboards feature computerized display panels synchronized to reveal one sponsor message at a time, avoiding zapping, eliminating courtside clutter and conflicting sponsor messages. The panels work like a giant scroll, presenting images, text and even pictures with remarkable color and clarity.
"Dorna, USA will be actively involved in all facets of event ownership and sports marketing, as well as entertainment promotion and marketing. We will provide complete marketing and management services and offer our clients an integrated approach to sports marketing in professional and amateur sports as well as employing the same thrust in the entertainment field," said Evans.
Under Evans' leadership, Madison Square Garden Corporation aggressively expanded its activities in sports, entertainment, television, and facilities development and management. Evans was responsible for the conceptualization and implementation of the recently completed $200 million renovation of the Madison Square Garden Center, which was completed on time and within budget.
In addition, Evans was instrumental in the acquisition of the television rights to the New York Yankees games, which resulted in the expansion of the subscriber base of the Madison Square Garden Network from 1.7 to 4.5 million subscribers.
As CEO of the New York Knickerbockers and the New York Rangers, Evans served on the board of governors of the National Basketball Association and National Hockey League.
Dorna, USA, is headquartered at 555 Madison Ave., New York.
