EUROTECH'S EKOR PERFORMS WELL AT CHERNOBYL SHELTER PROJECT.
The radiation-resistant EKOR was applied during the third week in March on the most critical pile of fuel under the nuclear reactor that failed over fourteen years ago near Kiev, Ukraine.
EKOR is maintaining an isolation coating and seal of the pile, preventing further dusting and leaching of contamination to the environment.
In his letter report to Eurotech, The Shelter Project Director, V.I. Kupney, said that after only two months EKOR has already exceeded the longevity of all previously applied materials, which degraded rapidly in the severe radiation environment and lost isolation effectiveness. The EKOR-encapsulated fuel pile has radiation readings in the range of 1000 rads on contact.
EKOR has been laboratory tested to an accumulated dose of 10 gigarads without loss of physical properties.
The EKOR application was performed under a joint agreement between EUROTECH, Ltd. and Chernobyl Shelter Project. The EKOR isolation cover on the fuel pile was designed in cooperation with engineers responsible for the long-term isolation and extraction of the fuel from the Chernobyl sarcophagus.
EKOR is a desirable material for both the long-term isolation and future extraction of radioactive fuel - a method using highly corrosive materials - from which EKOR is also resistant and will maintain its encapsulating properties.
EKOR was created after the 1986 nuclear accident at Chernobyl to be applied in remediation of the highly radioactive debris throughout the accident area. The first application was to the most critical fuel mass to demonstrate EKOR's ability to perform under the most severe environment.
Eurotech is marketing EKOR as the answer to nuclear waste managers' problems in containment, transportation, storage and disposal of nuclear waste.
