EURONEWS SELECTS ODETICS FOR INDUSTRY'S FIRST FIVE-CHANNEL AUDIO APPLICATION OF BROADCAST CART MACHINE

LAS VEGAS, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Two Odetics TCS90 Cart Machines play an important role in the automation of Europe's first multilingual television news channel, Euronews. Each Euronews TCS90 is equipped with five Betacam SP BVW-85 machines, capable of single- channel video with five-channel audio. Two channels are PCM (digital audio). Euronews is the first station to use a cart machine to transmit five-channel audio.
Located in Lyon, France, Euronews serves Western Europe and Scandinavia plus parts of the Mediterranean. Currently, Euronews broadcasts 24 hours a day in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Eventually, the station will transmit in eight languages.
According to Jean Michel Seigneur, head of automation for Thomson Broadcast, integrator of the Euronews Broadcast Centre, the flexibility of the TCS90 makes it particularly well-suited to the Euronews installation. "The TCS90 is a powerful library management system," said Seigneur. "We selected Odetics because of its software data base structure and ability to meet our five-channel audio requirements. In addition, the TCS90's compatibility with a wide range of VTRs make it a good choice for Euronews."
The Odetics TCS90 is available in all popular VTR formats and is field-upgradeable to current and future formats. It accommodates dual-size cassettes, automating both commercial and program playback without the need for other equipment or software programs.
Odetics manufactures the widest range of automated tape libraries for broadcast and computer applications. Odetics Broadcast is credited with developing the first robotic large library management system for the television broadcast industry, and the first highly integrated cart machine that automates numerous functions for up to eight channel playouts.
