EURATEX APPOINTS NEW PRESIDENT.

At its meeting on December 11 in Brussels, the General Assembly of Euratex, the European Apparel and Textile Organisation, appointed Jean de Jaegher to the post of President, where he replaces Dominique Jacomet. Pierre Marsal replaces Guy Arnould as the organisation's Director-General. The organisation also announced its intention to call on the EU Council of Ministers and the European Commission to ensure that in the preparation of Phase III of the Agreement on Textile and Clothing, the Community's trading partners are prevailed upon to lower their tariffs and dismantle illegal or artificial technical barriers. Euratex is also anxious to contribute to the implementation of the plan of action for the textiles industry*, notably those actions which concern the functioning of the Internal Market and environmental priorities. Euratex members employ 2.3 million people and returned a combined turnover of ECU197.2 billion in 1997. The European textiles industry was the world's leading exporter in 1997 (16.2%).
