EUR1.2M DEPORT BILL; IMMIGRATION.

Byline: SARAH BARDON

THE Government spent EUR1.2million deporting 264 people over the past 18 months, it was revealed yesterday.

Fine Gael's immigration spokesman Denis Naughton said: "Ireland needs a functioning, fair and efficient immigration system but the system is broken with an estimated seven-year backlog of 'leave to remain' applications." The figures showed the removal of a Ghanaian man last year cost EUR151,900 and the deportation of a Georgian man in March cost EUR35,888.

Mr Naughton added: "The EU has proposed a list of 'safe countries' as part of streamlining the asylum process which would make it easier for member states to repatriate illegal immigrants.

"This plan needs to be put into action."
