EU to fund seaweed fuel study; ENERGY.

HARVESTING seaweed for "green" energy is to be researched by a multinational team of experts, it was announced yesterday.

The EU is providing pounds 5million to fund the project in Northern Ireland, Scotland and the Republic.

Experts will look at how renewable energy can be created from seaweed and marine algae.

The Scottish Association for Marine Sciences in Oban will lead the project in partnership with Queen's University Belfast and the University of Ulster, and the Institutes of Technology in Dundalk and Sligo in the Irish Republic.

Energy Minister Arlene Foster said: "It will put the region and our universities at the forefront of worldwide marine bio-energy research."
