EU growth plans spell new hope.

Byline: SAM HAMILTON

TANAISTE Eamon Gilmore yesterday welcomed plans for growth across Europe.

It cames as EU leaders agreed on Friday on a EUR130billion package to revive economies.

Speaking at a meeting of the Labour Party Central Council, the Minister for Foreign Affairs & Trade insisted this had always been fought for by the Government.

He said: "I welcome the news that there is growing momentum towards a strong European Growth Agenda.

"This is something the Irish Government has been pressing for for some time. The election of [French President] Francois Hollande has given a new impetus towards a realistic growth strategy.

"It is clear from the Rome meeting that consensus is building to do more.

"What matters now is that the European Council takes concrete steps to move this agenda on."
