EU/BULGARIA/ROMANIA: EURO 225 MILLION IN PRE-ACCESSION FARM FUNDING FOR 2004 TO BE APPROVED.
More than Euro 225 million will be made available to Bulgaria and Romania for 2004 under the EU's SAPARD (Special Accession Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development) scheme. The European Commission is set to confirm its decision on December 1 to reserve Euro 67,560,000 for Bulgaria, and Euro 157,640,000 for Romania. Formally speaking, the Commission plans to decide to authorise signature of the annual SAPARD financing agreements for 2004 with the two EU candidate countries. It is also looking to adapt SAPARD's multi-annual financing agreement that defines overall SAPARD conditions to reflect changes in EU legislation and implementation experience. Bulgaria and Romania aim to join the EU in January 2007.
