EU/ARCTIC : PARLIAMENT CALLS ON EU TO DEFEND ITS INTERESTS.
MEPs emphasise the strategic nature of the region
In a resolution adopted on 13 March, the European Parliament has called on the EU to develop its own strategy for the Arctic, "a region that faces not only dramatic changes and important challenges but also growing interest from new, first-rate economic and political actors, such as Asia," emphasised MEPs.
The resolution, proposed by the EPP, S&D, ALDE and ECR groups under the leadership of Michael Gahler (EPP, Germany), emphasises the strategic nature of the region and the need for the Union to confirm its diplomatic presence in all the working groups at the Arctic Council, as well as its contribution to sustainable development on the ground, and its cooperation on research in the region. It must, says the resolution, maintain links between the EU and interested parties in the Arctic, whether these are political, economic, industrial, scientific, or civil, and develop synergies between existing programmes.
Due to its potential for exploitation, development of energy resources and primary materials, and new shipping routes, the Arctic region attracts greed. "The European Commission and the member states must ensure that industries and European scientists can contribute, in a balanced and sustainable manner, to its development, according to strict environmental and socio-economic standards - particularly when faced with the activities of countries such as China and South Korea," emphasised MEPs.
