EU'S MERGER AUTHORITIES SCRUTINISE LATEST NOTIFICATIONS.

Currently, the European Commission's Merger Task Force is considering four notifications which fall within the scope of the 1989 Council Merger Regulation (4064/89/EC). During the routine 30-day review of the deals, all faxed comments can be sent to the Merger Task Force on (+32) 02/296 43 01, quoting the relevant reference number, before the deadline date.* Defence: Italian aerospace and helicopters firm, Finmeccanica, and UK industrial services company, GKN, notified the Commission on 17 October of their joint venture which will make and market helicopters. Comments by 4 November, ref: COMP/M.1501 - GKN Westland/Agusta/JV* Insurance: Dutch insurance group, Achmea, and Portuguese banking group, Banco Comercial Portugues, notified the Commission on 18 October of its intentions to take over Dutch insurance and financial services rival Eureko. Comments by 4 November, ref: COMP/M.2065 - Achmea/BCP/Eureko.* Telecommunications: Spanish incumbent operator, Telef[cent]nica, and Finnish telecoms group, Sonera, notified the Commission on 18 October of their planned acquisition of German firm, Marabu, to act as a vehicle company to help secure a third-generation mobile telephony licence in Germany in the UMTS auction. Comments by 4 November, ref: COMP/M.2144 - Telef[cent]nica/Sonera/German UMTS* Beer: UK brewer Scottish & Newcastle plc and Portuguese holding company, VTR SGPS SA, informed the EU executive on 18 October of their plans to take joint control of Portuguese company, Centralcontrol SGPS SA, the parent company of local brewer and beer retailer Centralcer. Comments by 4 November, ref: COMP/M.2152 - Scottish & Newcastle/JV/Centralcer.
