ETHICS COMPLAINT TARGETS FDA FOR $1 MILLION CONFLICTS
 CONCERNING PROZAC
WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The Citizens Commission on Human Rights, International Office, issued the following:
The controversial psychiatric drug Prozac remains on the market only because staggering conflicts of interest have blinded the FDA, the Government Ethics Office was told today.
According to a complaint filed with the Government Ethics Office by the Citizens Commission on Human Rights, a total of $1 million in active financial interests with makers of psychiatric antidepressants tainted a recent FDA advisory committee and rendered it incapable of impartially ruling on the nightmarish effects of those drugs.
The complaint charges that five out of the 10 members of the FDA's Psychopharmacologic Drugs Advisory Committee, who evaluated the violence-inducing nature of Prozac and other psychiatric antidepressants on Sept. 20, 1991, had financial interests in the companies which make those drugs.
"It is no wonder that the FDA's committee claimed they were blind to the evidence linking Prozac to suicidal and violent behavior even as the evidence was being paraded before them," said CCHR Executive Director Sanford Block. "Money talks."
CCHR's complaint also challenged the use of psychiatrists within the committee to conduct an investigation into the creation of murder and suicide by the psychiatric industry. Almost all the FDA's advisory committee members were psychiatrists, which, in effect, allowed them to pass judgment on themselves.
Since the FDA hearing on Sept. 20, several horrible tragedies have been perpetrated by people on Prozac. For example, Kristine Cushing of Orange County, Calif., shot and killed her two daughters and then turned the gun on herself, suffering a minor head wound, while on the drug.
Her case is similar to that of Sandra Moneymaker of Halifax, Va., who shot and killed her two sons and then turned the gun on herself while on the drug. Moneymaker is now facing murder charges for the April 1991 slayings.
Also last month, Barbara Mortenson, of San Francisco, attacked her 87-year-old mother, biting her 20 times and leaving "bite-sized pieces of flesh" on the carpet, following her use of Prozac.
"FDA has completely abandoned its responsibility to protect the health of American citizens by turning drug oversight over to persons with financial interests in makers of those drugs," Block said. "The continuing horrors linked to Prozac exist because of these FDA ethics violations, which properly fall on the shoulders of the Government Ethics Office to investigate and end."
CCHR was established in 1969 by the Church of Scientology to investigate and expose psychiatric violations of human rights. The commission maintains a toll-free Prozac information hotline at 800-869-2247.
