ETHERNET NETWORK INTERFACE FROM XEROX ENGINEERING SYSTEMS ALLOWS PLOTTER SHARING ACROSS TWO OPERATING SYSTEMS

ROCHESTER, N.Y., March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- A network interface that provides a low-cost way to connect Xerox Engineering Systems plotters to TCP/IP and Novell NetWare networks was announced today.
The Model 6960 provides a high-speed data path between each computer and the plotter for greater flexibility, higher productivity, seamless operation and centralized management. Furthermore, it addresses the needs of the installed customer base as well as those of new customers.
Many Xerox Engineering Systems plotters are connected to UNIX workstations (e.g., Sun, HP, IBM, SGI) or PCs which are themselves networked to each other using the industry's popular protocols -- TCP/IP and NetWare. With the Model 6960, a single plotter becomes a resource available to many users throughout a building or even several buildings.
"Users no longer have to attach the plotter to a single computer system controlled by one person," said Quinn Tran, director of product marketing, Xerox Engineering Systems. "This enables users to share resources and the associated costs."
The 6960 is a multiprotocol plot server which supports TCP/IP and Novell NetWare IPX protocols simultaneously. Based on the type of data, it is capable of switching from one to the other automatically.
Installation and management of this network interface is designed to be easy and it is switch selectable, thereby providing easy connection to a network. The Model 6960 supports all three physical LAN interfaces: Thick Ethernet (10Base5), Thin Ethernet (10Base2) and Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP or 10baseT).
Xerox Engineering Systems plotters can be connected via serial (RS-232C) and/or DMA parallel (Centronics) ports. Each port has a unique port number at the same address. This allows simultaneous plotting on both ports with practically no effect on throughput.
The DMA parallel port conforms to the Centronics specification and can sustain data transfers of up to 130K bytes per second (bps). The serial port can be configured for standard baud rates between 300 and 38,400 bps. The recommended configuration is one Model 6960 per plotter, Centronics being the primary interface.
The host software supported includes Sun OS 4.1.2 (or higher on SPARC 1 and 2, IPC and IPX), AIX 3.1 (or higher on IBM RS/6000) and DOS (5.0 Windows 3.1, NetWare 3.1 on 386 and 486 PCs). The Model 6960 supports up to eight NetWare file servers and 32 queues. Future releases will include ULTRIX (DECstations), SCO UNIX (PCs), LAT and EtherTalk.
The Model 6960 consists of a two-pound compact box, Centronics cable, software and installation manual. It is available immediately worldwide from the Xerox Engineering Systems direct sales force and through authorized Xerox dealers. The cost is $895.
Xerox Engineering Systems is the world's largest supplier of engineering copiers, wide-format printers and fax machines, raster plotters and engineering document management systems.
