ETHAN ALLEN FOUNDER PUTS HIS WORLD CLASS PRIVATE COLLECTION OF ANTIQUES AND ART UP FOR SALE

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- It isn't very often that an 85-year-old decides to start a new business by putting his world- class personal collection of antiques and art up for sale.
But Mr. Nathan Ancell, founder and chairman emeritus of Ethan Allen, has done exactly that.
This museum-quality collection -- gathered from the four corners of the world during more than 20 trips he has taken over 60 years -- is currently on public view. Anyone interested in purchasing a $69,000 set of carved jade panels of a $45,000 Sicilian cart can walk into the International Center for Antiques & Art showroom at 216 Central Park Avenue in White Plains and purchase one of these ultimate gifts.
The 12,000-square-foot store is a treasure trove of rare and unusual arts and antiques which Mr. Ancell found in tiny shops tucked away in remote Chinese mountain villages, in loft studios of SoHo, and in medieval castles in England, France, and throughout Europe. They reflect the most beautiful, the truly unique, the distinctly individualistic examples of what an artist can create.
The extensive and fascinating private collection includes fine furniture, sculpture, glass, jade, ivory, folk art, American quilts and samplers, porcelain, copper, paintings, brass, wooden boxes, turned and carved bowls, silk rugs, tapestries, and many other thousands of items. There has never been so much beauty seen in one place.
Mr. Ancell has established the International Center for Antiques & Art to launch a new business venture entitled The World of Interior Design, which will feature the most beautiful furniture and floor coverings and art from eight or nine countries around the world. The first The World of Interior Design store will be located on the floor below where Mr. Ancell's private collection is on display.
Mr. Ancell founded Ethan Allen in 1932, and named the company in honor of the great revolutionary hero, General Ethan Allan, who was knows as the father of Vermont. Today, it is one of the nation's leading furniture manufacturers and retailers with annual sales of $650 million.
He held the position of chairman of the board until 1988 when he became chairman emeritus.
The center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.; and by appointment.
Private tours are available for the media. Call the contact listed below.
