ESSEX CORPORATION PREVAILS IN DOE CONTRACT PROTEST

COLUMBIA, Md., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Essex Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: ESEX) was notified by the Department of Energy (DOE) that the General Accounting Office (GAO) denied an unsuccessful bidder's protest, clearing the way for execution by the company of a previously announced $14.2 million contract award. The contract is priced for three years of renewed support of DOE Transportation Safeguards Division and two following optional years. Essex has won two protests and a recompetition and is now preparing to put its team to work at Kirtland AFB, N.M., to develop and conduct training for DOE nuclear materials couriers.
Harry Letaw, chairman and CEO of Essex, stated: "This has been a long and expensive process for the company and a grueling one for the people committed to perform the work. For over 21 months, Essex was denied more than $10,000 per day in revenues enjoyed by a bidder excluded from recompeting. This has seriously impacted Essex and damaged our credibility in the financial community. Two years ago, we submitted our proposal to continue our superb work for DOE, but were replaced by the present contractor. We challenged that award. GAO found the procurement to be flawed, ordered a recompetition and excluded the incumbent contractor from bidding. Essex won the recompetition, as announced by DOE in March, and has now prevailed over an unsuccessful bidder's protest. Our team is ready to go to work."
Essex Corporation, a publicly traded technology-based company, supplies human reliability assurance and training products and services and optical computer apparatus to government and industry.
