 ESSEX CORPORATION ANNOUNCES AWARD OF OPTICAL COMPUTING PATENT
 COLUMBIA, Md., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Essex Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: ESEX) announced today that it has been awarded a patent for a new imaging technology which it calls ImSyn. Based on an analog optical computing approach, the invention enables the generation of images at speeds that exceed 1 trillion operations per second. This patent is the first of several patents for the ImSyn technology. Essex has already begun to apply the ImSyn technology to speeding image construction in two diverse fields: medical imaging and synthetic aperture radar (SAR).
 In medical imaging, Essex is developing optically assisted computing systems that have the potential to increase the reconstruction speeds of computerized tomographic images (CAT scans) by a factor of over 100 times. In SAR, Essex is testing systems that make possible accurate real-time images from aircraft, earth resources satellites, or remotely piloted vehicles. The major advantages of ImSyn systems are that they are small, light in weight and consume little power. Essex expects the invention to be applied to a broad array of imaging applications, including: magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasonic and acoustic medical imaging, seismology and other earth resources needs, microscopy, other forms of visible light imaging and image compression.
 Chairman and CEO Dr. Harry Letaw said, "This patent award represents a major milestone in the Essex effort to bring optically assisted computing technology to the marketplace."
