ESPRIT NAMES CLAIRE ORTIZ AS JUNIOR DESIGN DIRECTOR; A NEW ERA BEGINS FOR ESPRIT JUNIOR DESIGNS

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- After an extensive search for a visionary to lead the Junior design team, Esprit de Corp. today named Claire Ortiz Junior design director, effective immediately.
Prior to this appointment, Ortiz was director of product development for BWS Brands Inc. where she was responsible for total company trend and design direction for Juniors, Young Mens and Childrens divisions for private label, mass merchants and department stores. Ortiz introduced the much publicized hemp fabric to the young mens industry through "Rag Poets," BWS' young mens contemporary line.
"Claire's exactly what we've been searching for," said Andy Cohen, president of the Esprit Junior Division. "Her creativity, credible design approach and interpretation of 'the street' will re-establish a more successful Junior business. Claire will bring a fresh approach to Esprit Juniors because of her work in young mens fashions, which has been setting the pace in the industry the past couple of years."
Ortiz began her design career in 1986 when she joined "All That Jazz," a division of Chorus Line Inc., where she was the designer for Junior Sportswear and Dresses. In 1988 Ortiz joined "Zero Gravity," a division of Wintop Corp., as a designer and merchandiser for an active sportswear line for young men and boys.
From 1990 to 1992 Ortiz was director of design for Enchante Inc., a division of Kellwood Industries, where she set the design and trend direction for juniors and girls and introduced a new young mens and boys division, "Sector One."
In 1992, Ortiz founded a young mens and cross-over contemporary collection called Smoke Street Couture where she designed, merchandised, marketed and managed production for this collection. In March of 1993, Ortiz joined BWS Brands Inc. as director of product development.
"Claire has an innate sense of the future," said Susie Tompkins, co-founder and co-owner. "She is consistently on target when anticipating where the product should go next. Her progressive approach to design will create great energy for the product and together she and Andy will make a great team."
