 ESPRIT EXHIBITS ARTWORK BY SANCHEZ SCHOOL STUDENTS;
 HIGHLIGHTING ART EDUCATION FOR SAN FRANCISCO'S PUBLIC SCHOOLS
 SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released by Esprit today:
 "A.R.T.S. -- Art Returns to Schools -- is a program developed by San Francisco art advisors Dominique Scholl and Kristen Paulson. A.R.T.S. addresses the idea that creative thinking must be an integral part of children's education. Budget cuts in recent years have eliminated art classes from public school curricula. As a result, children are not being taught that the creative process is an important aspect of learning.
 "A.R.T.S., Esprit, the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) and the Sanchez School have joined forces to bring art back to San Francisco's school children.
 "The Sanchez School is an inner city school in the Mission District of San Francisco that lost its funding for arts education. In Spring '92, the San Francisco Art Institute initiated an arts education program by inviting Sanchez School students to the Art Institute for a field trip twice a year. Kathryn Reasoner, SFAI's director of extension education and summer programs, expanded this into a year-round program. The result was a change in curriculum for SFAI and Sanchez students alike. SFAI students are now trained to develop in-depth art programs for the fifth-graders of the Sanchez School.
 "From October '92 through May '93, these SFAI students will spend one and one-half hours everyday integrating art education into the regular Sanchez School day. SFAI's goal is to expand the program to include Sanchez's third- and fourth-graders by 1993.
 "On Thursday, Nov. 19, 1992, at 3 p.m., Esprit will exhibit the students' artwork at their San Francisco showroom and host a reception for the young artists, their families, participants from SFAI, members of the business community, press and employees of Esprit. The exhibit, shown thereafter by appointment only through Nov. 25, will be the first public showing of the program results. Esprit's showroom is located opposite its headquarters at 900 Minnesota St. in San Francisco.
 "By celebrating their artwork with an exhibition, A.R.T.S. hopes to send the message to the children of the Sanchez School that art can be an important aspect of their lives. In addition, promoting the volunteer efforts of all involved with this exhibition reinforces the idea that this type of project can be replicated and/or expanded to include other public schools, businesses and arts organizations.
 "It is the goal of A.R.T.S. that this initial exhibition at Esprit will grow into a more meaningful collaboration between the business community and art outreach programs for children."
