ESPN Zone's 'Ultimate Couch Potato' Competition Rings in New Year on January 1st.

Wide-Eyed Sports Fans Attempt to Break World Record for Endurance TV Watching

BURBANK, Calif. -- Starting at 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday, January 1, 2008, tenacious sports fans will put their TV-watching and recliner-sitting prowess to the test in ESPN Zone's Ultimate Couch Potato competition.

Taking place exclusively at the New York and Chicago ESPN Zones, four competitors at each site will square off to see who can watch the most continuous hours of televised sports and potentially break the Guinness Book of World Records mark of 69 hours 48 minutes, set by Suresh Joachim in a separate 2005 event.

"The idea is pretty simple; ESPN Zone is the ultimate sports bar so we're hosting an event to find the ultimate couch potato," said Christine Baum, national marketing manager for ESPN Zone. "It started at our Chicago location five years ago and it became a phenomenon. Because of the success we've decided to expand it to New York this year. It's a lot tougher than most people think and participants need to come in mentally prepared with a game plan."

The rules are simple: competitors sit in comfy DreamSeat recliners in the front row of ESPN Zone's vast sports-viewing paradise - the "Screening Room" - facing a wall of HD TVs, all showing non-stop sports programming. Participants can order unlimited food and beverages, however they may not sleep or leave their chair and restroom breaks are permitted every eight hours, per Guinness Book rules for this event.

Fortunately for the competitors, New Year's Day is one of the most exciting days in televised sports. With six major college bowl games scheduled for January 1st (Outback, Cotton, Gator, Capital One, Rose and Sugar) there will be plenty of action to watch ...and watch...and watch.

To enter ESPN Zone's Ultimate Couch Potato competition, hopefuls must send an e-mail to, and in 200 words or less, describe why they have what it takes to become ESPN Zone's Ultimate Couch Potato. Entries will be judged on passion for sports, competitive spirit, and overall creativity. Entry must include phone number and mailing address of the sender and be received no later than midnight (ET) on December 14, 2007.

Each of the two winners of ESPN Zone's Ultimate Couch Potato competition (one in New York and one in Chicago) will receive a grand prize package worth nearly $7,000, including: a 42-inch Olevia LCD HD TV, a DreamSeat recliner, a year's subscription to ESPN The Magazine, a year's supply of ESPN Zone game cards, $200 in ESPN Zone gift certificates, as well as ESPN Zone's Ultimate Couch Potato trophy featuring a real live spud. Competitors sitting at least 12 hours will take home a DreamSeat recliner with their favorite team's logo. All participants will receive V-Moda earphones and ESPN Zone gift packs.
