ESKIMO PIE TEAMS UP WITH 7UP

RICHMOND, Va., June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Once again, Eskimo Pie Corp. (NASDAQ-NMS: EPIE) has one of the coolest ways to beat the summer heat with one of the hottest brand names in the world.
Eskimo Pie Corporation recently obtained the licensing rights for 7UP Frozen Spot Pops. Under the agreement, Eskimo Pie will manage the marketing and national distribution of existing frozen water ice products, and any other new frozen novelty products under the 7UP brands.
"This agreement," says David V. Clark, Eskimo Pie president and CEO, "makes us partners with one of the most recognized brands in the world, and the 7UP Spot character is one of the most popular mascots in advertising today. As we are already well into this year's season, we do not expect that the addition of the 7UP products will have any appreciable effect on our results for 1993. However, we are confident that with the power of this brand, and with our marketing strength in frozen novelties, over time we can significantly grow the 7UP brand in the novelty category."
7UP Spot Pops are now available in 7UP flavor and CHERRY 7UP flavor twelve packs, which sell at an average retail price of $2.29. Eskimo Pie and Seven-Up intend to test additional products before next year's summer season.
"Consumers continue to look," Clark adds, "for names they trust in the frozen novelty case. We look forward to developing new products with Seven-Up for next year and years to come."
Earlier this year, Eskimo Pie introduced Frozen Tootsie Pops, another water ice product, and Ghirardelli premium chocolate covered ice cream bars. The Company also markets the number one selling Welch's Fruit Juice bars in addition to marketing its ESKIMO PIE products.
"Teaming with Eskimo Pie follows our strategy to link with blue chip companies," said Melanie Payne, in brand management with Dallas-based Seven-Up USA. "This partnership is a cornerstone project for expanding our licensing program for 7UP brands."
7UP is America's best recognized non-cola soft drink trademark and has been a market leader in the lemon-lime category since its origin in 1929. Seven-Up USA is a division of Dr Pepper/Seven-Up Companies, Inc., the third largest producer of soft drink concentrates in the United States.
The Richmond, Virginia-based Eskimo Pie Corporation created the frozen novelty industry in 1921 with the invention of the ESKIMO PIE ice cream bar. Today, the Company's ESKIMO PIE brand ranks in the top five in a field of more than 400 frozen novelty brands. The Company markets a broad range of frozen novelties throughout the United States under its ESKIMO PIE, SUGAR FREEDOM ESKIMO PIE, Welch's, Tootsie Pops, Ghirardelli and now 7UP brand names. The Company markets these leading frozen novelty products through a nationwide network of licensed manufacturers. Through an initial public offering of its common stock in 1992, the Company became independent after 68 years of majority ownership by Reynolds Metals Company.
